In between Cebu and Bohol, there are small islands with pristine white beaches and crystal-clear waters that rival those of Boracay. The closest of these were Gilutongan and Olango Island. On March 15, the Kapwa Marketing team organized an island-hopping trip to both islands with one goal: to rest and enjoy life in the moment.
Preparation
To ensure everyone was well-fed throughout the journey, our interns and Head of SEA, Melvin, prepared a diverse Filipino and German platter. Chopsuey, Afritada, Pancit Canton, and Lechon were cooked as the main Filipino staples. German Franks, Goulash, and beer formed the main dishes for the German tourists who came along with the team.
Island Hopping
Upon arrival at Marigondon Port, everyone—especially the interns—was excited for the trip. Sailing on our large bangka, we first stopped at Gilutongan to experience boat riding and jet skiing activities. The waves were too strong and it was low tide at the time; hence, the team wasn’t able to walk along the island’s shores. Moving on to Olango Island, we anchored near the shoreline and had lunch together with the Germans.
While much of the interaction between Filipinos and Germans was limited, it was evident that both groups were happy to enjoy the day together. Swimming was a fun activity for all. We didn’t mind the sun’s heat blasting upon us (although that would bite some of the interns back after).
After more than six hours of island hopping, we sailed back to port and, aside from keeping leftovers—especially the Lechon—we bid our goodbyes to rest and end the wonderful day.
Reflection
Kapwa Marketing’s island-hopping activity has been a yearly staple since its foundation. This year, most of the interns experienced it for the first time. It was not solely for enjoyment, but also served as a point of reflection: that it’s okay to take life slowly and enjoy the little things.
Our work in digital marketing demands a fast-paced environment, one in which a person can get lost in the pressure and demands of work. It’s not always easy. All of us at Kapwa Marketing have had difficult moments at work. Activities like island hopping help destress from the workload, but also reassure us that the people we work with are human beings too—and that it’s okay to rest.
By stepping away from our screens for a day, we were able to reflect on how far we’ve come—what went well, what didn’t, and what we can do better moving forward.
